Medical researchers around the globe have come up with startling results which prove that the children who are mouth breathers may “develop long, narrow faces, narrow mouths” and “many other unattractive facial features”. Children who are mouth breathers are found to be inactive and unhealthy. ‘Dental disorders’ and ‘Improper Breathing Style, are the two main factors that lead to serious health repercussions. A dentist trained in a specialized therapy can help children to practice proper breathing and tongue exercises that can keep them healthy. In India, very few clinics have been certified to carry out this highly individualized reeducation or re- patterning of oral and facial muscles program.

Talking on the issue, Dr Joy Kurian, Pediatric Dentist, Joy’s Dental Clinic said, “We are carrying out a program that includes facial and tongue exercises and behavior modification technique to promote proper tongue position, improved breathing, chewing and swallowing. Children who come here for treatment are also taught to use proper head and neck postures. Children between 8-12 years of age can be benefited from the therapy. After that, head and neck growth is pretty much complete and improvement prospects become limited and take more time and determination.

Studies have also proved that posttherapy measures had a significant improvement in functioning of lips, tongue, and jaw. The therapy also improves speech intelligibility of words in children and also instills in them confidence and self-esteem. “Diet is also another major factor for children to evolve facial deformities. After breast or bottle feeding, parents should make sure that they feed their children with raw fruit, vegetables and other foods. This early chewing contributes to good jaw development. Incorporating these changes in children’s life can bring a positive effect to their life,” emphasized DrBindu, Joy’s Dental Clinic.
