FWD Business looks at the two candidates who have been nominated to become the next President of India

The 2 candidates vying for the position of the President of the country is UPA’s Meira Kumar and NDA’s Ram Nath Kovind. Both hail from Bihar and have held various important positions.

Kovind was the Governor of Bihar from 2015-17. He was also a lawyer who practised in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for more than 16 years. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 1994. He also served as a member on the Board of Management of Dr. BR Ambedkar University and as a member on the Board of Governors of IIM- Kolkata. He has represented India in the UN and has also addressed the General Assembly.

Kumar is a lawyer and former diplomat who was elected unopposed as the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha. Previously part of India’s Mission in Spain and UK, she currently has the support of 17 parties to contest in this election. She entered electoral politics in 1985 and has won elections in 2004 as well as 2009.

The process of nomination will continue till June 28th and the election for the next President of India is to be held on July 17th.
