Little kids carrying bags double their sizes and walking hunched back has become a common sight these days. However worrisome the issue is, little has been done to change it. The Maharashtra state government carried out a number of random checks to find out the weight of schoolbags in primary schools last year understanding that these children are risking damage to their backs.

According to a Times of India report, a government school in Kannur has come up with an innovative way to counter this. GM Upper Primary School in Kattampally sends a van to pick up bags of students who don’t avail the bus facility. Through this venture they are trying to ease the students’ burden and promote walking. Rid off these heavy bags, children can actually enjoy walking to school and this sends a positive message to decrease dependency on vehicles, in turn decreasing pollution as well.

Headmistress Gangabai N said that over 300 students are able to avail this facility. The service is free as of now but the school is planning to begin charging a nominal fee for the same. N M Ravi is the teacher behind this initiative.

This is a noble venture and it would be very useful and helpful if more schools came up with such innovative solutions. Reducing the burden of school children should be taken up the schools across the country.
