8 June 1786 – Ice-cream was advertised for the first time

An announcement appeared in a paper called ‘The New York Post Boy’ on 8 June 1786. It said, “Ladies and gentlemen may be supplied with ice cream every day at the city tavern by their humble servant, Joseph Cowe”. This is considered the first ever advertisement for Ice-cream. Ice cream, considered a frozen mystery managed to take over the world pretty soon and engulf everyone with their cold deliciousness.

8 June 1936 – India State Broadcasting Station renamed All India Radio (AIR)

Private radio service began in Chennai in 1924 and the British government gave license to the Indian Broadcasting Company to launch Radio stations in Mumbai and Kolkata as well. Later, the government took possession of the transmitters and began its operations as the Indian State Broadcasting Corporation. In the year 1936, it was renamed as All India Radio (AIR), the name we are so familiar with today. AIR is one of the largest radio networks in the world.

8 June 1948 – Air India’s first international flight takes off

Air India’s newly acquired aircraft called the ‘Malabar Princess’ made its maiden international flight on June 8, 1948. It was a 5,000 mile journey from Mumbai (then Bombay) to London. The 24-hour flight was commanded by Captain KR Guzdar. The flight made two refuelling stops at Cairo and Geneva. The 35 passengers on the historic first fight included notable names like Maharaja Duleepsinhji, JRD Tata and so on. The tickets were priced at Rs. 1720.

June 8 – World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is celebrated to remind everyone of the major role the oceans play in our everyday life. It seeks to inform the public about the impact of human actions on the ocean and to develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean. This year’s theme is “Our Oceans, our future” and it is connected to the Ocean Conference taking place from 5 to 9 June at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
